Structured Practical Evaluation

For pharmacy technician applicants in the profession

SPE- Structured Practical Evaluation for Pharmacy Technicians who have completed the Drug Distribution Bridging Courses:
Completion of a structured practical evaluation of the "Independent Double Check" is required in order to become a Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Ontario College of Pharmacists.

This activity is critical to the pharmacy technician role and in order to demonstrate their competency, candidates will be required to perform accurate product release in the work setting. This component of the bridging program will be administered by the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP), following the candidate’s completion of the Management of Drug Distribution course with the evaluation of the Independent Double Check taking place in their current workplace.

This activity will require supporting documentation to be completed and submitted through an online portal upon completion. The program is based on Competency #5. (Drug Distribution) of the Professional Competencies for Canadian Pharmacy Technicians at Entry-to-Practice (NAPRA, 2007).

SPE Candidates will complete their SPE program under the supervision of an evaluator and at a site, approved by the Registration Committee. The evaluator must be a pharmacist, or a registered pharmacy technician who has completed the College’s online orientation requirements. SPE Candidates must undertake the completion of a minimum of 500 accurately checked items with a maximum of 50 orders/prescriptions checked per day. The length of time for the checking of items will span a minimum of 2 weeks to a maximum of 12 weeks.

An online Structured Practical Evaluation orientation is available for both the candidate and evaluator to view for an outline of the process. This orientation must be viewed prior to beginning the SPE process.
