Multi-medication compliance aids allow different medications to be placed in the same compartment and are organized by dosing intervals, in order to help improve patient adherence to medication therapy. The College adopted a policy permitting pharmacists to dispense solid oral dosage forms in multi-medication compliance aids, provided that the following conditions are met:
- The use of compliance aids is subject to the professional judgement of the pharmacist, and must be based on the individual needs of the patient.
- The pharmacist must obtain written consent from the patient or the patient’s agent in order to dispense the patient’s medication in a compliance aid. The consent must include the fact that the compliance aid may not be child resistant.
- The medication used in the compliance aid should be dispensed for the entire prescribed quantity, unless otherwise indicated by the patient or the prescriber (DIDFA,9.).
- Documentation must be provided to the patient or the patient’s agent, stating the full details of the compliance aid program, including disclosure of any charges and details of reimbursement.
- Sanitary techniques, such as the use of gloves or tweezers, must be used when repackaging medication into the compliance aid.
- The container should be clearly labelled to identify and describe the container’s contents, including specific tablet description (DPRA, 156.3.) so that the patient or caregiver can identify what each medication is.
- Provision should be made to promptly modify the patient’s compliance aid when a change is made to the patient’s drug therapy.
